Chairperson of the Sauti ya Wanawake Pwani Board
Dorcas Gibran, Chairperson of the Sauti ya Wanawake Pwani Board, has over 25 years of experience in working with the community to majorly champion Women’s rights and elimination of Gender Based Violence among the Taveta Community.
She initiated the Sauti ya Wanawake Taveta chapter Forum which brought grass root women voices together in advocating for protection of Women and Girls and majorly fighting FGM which is rampant in Taveta.
“I am the Chairperson Sauti ya Wanawake Pwani (SYWP) which is a women grassroots movement, it is the umbrella body to the many Sauti chapters that exist and operate in different counties within Coast region. SYWP has been creates awareness on GBV and capacity building for women as well as engaging with policy makers towards realizing women rights as human rights. Sauti empowers women through capacity building and creates a safe space for women to speak up and advocate for their rights as well as discuss issues affecting them. SYWP covers all 6 counties in Coast region of Kenya.
I have been nominated and won twice the Inspirational Women award, awarded by the National Gender and Equality Commission twice in 2012 and in 2014. I am a member of the Employment taskforce in Taita Taveta County and also a social auditor in the county. My activities include holding the government accountable in ensuring access to standard services at the community level.
In my community work, I have spearheaded the formation of the Queen and King of change clubs in school to fight early marriages and FGM which is rampant in Taita Taveta County. Through advocacy with other women, we have been able to lobby the establishment of the GBVRC in Taveta sub county hospital.
In my quest to advance my learning on the gains of women, I have visited Rwanda and Congo and shared learning experiences on community women participation and its advantages in development.”
