Plenary Panel 1: New Issues, New Formations – Young Women’s Leadership

Young women in Africa play a critical role in various sectors. In women’s rights organizations and other social movements, they continue to be vital to the sustainability of women’s rights organizing and have also been at the forefront in the creative industry, political leadership, media and engagements using digital technology among other areas. Faced by lack of decent jobs for both young women and men, young women have led the way by combining their creativity and expertise to develop some of the most innovative ideas that combine both social entrepreneurship and job creation in the continent. Young women face specific impediments such as access to capital for business development and opportunities, limited access to funding and support for social justice organising, lack of capacity-building opportunities, a significant increase of attacks on young women due to societal expectations on dress norms, and challenges of inclusion and effective participation within different spaces including women’s rights movements.

In this provocative and thought provoking session, a young generation of women leaders challenges themselves and other women leaders on the basis of their current organising for women’s rights and their creative business ventures. They demonstrate the transformative nature of their creativity.
